Walking Around Mykonos Town
Mykonos Town, or Chora, is a maze of narrow paved paths, whitewashed houses and small squares, and the only way to really enjoy it is on foot. Little Venice, the windmills and the Old Port are all within walking distance of each other. Outside town, distances grow quickly: Ornos is 3.5 km away and Elia 11.7 km, so for beaches and villa areas you will need transport.
KTEL Buses in Mykonos
Public buses are run by KTEL, with a fleet of modern, air conditioned buses. There are three bus stations in Mykonos Town:
Airport, New Port, Platis Gialos, Ornos, Agios Ioannis, Psarou, Paradise, Paraga and Super Paradise.
Ano Mera, Kalafatis and Elia.
Agios Stefanos, Tourlos (New Port), Ano Mera, Kalafatis, Elia, Kalo Livadi and Panormos.
From May to September there are many more departures per day. Outside the season, some routes run only three or four times a day, so always check the latest timetable on the official KTEL Mykonos website. Most buses are not wheelchair friendly.
Water Taxi to the South Coast Beaches
The water taxi is the most enjoyable way to hop between beaches. Sea Bus Between the New Port and Mykonos Town
Most ferries and cruise ships arrive at the New Port in Tourlos, about 3 km from town. The sea bus connects it with the Old Port in the centre of Mykonos Town, with extra departures when cruise ships are in port. It has wheelchair and stroller access, which makes it a very practical option for families.
Taxis and Uber in Mykonos
Mykonos has a limited number of licensed taxis, so in July and August you can wait a long time at the taxi ranks, especially at night and at the airport. Uber does work on the island, but only as a way to book a regular licensed taxi, because private car ride hailing such as UberX is not available in Greece. In busy periods the app often shows no cars. For important journeys, book a transfer in advance.

A rental car, ATV or scooter gives you the most freedom, and it is the only practical way to reach wild beaches such as Agios Sostis, Ftelia and Fokos, which have no bus service. Some roads are narrow and some routes, like the one to Kapari, are not well signposted, so drive carefully. In Mykonos Town, the centre is made of pedestrian alleys, so park at the edge of town and walk in.
Getting to and from the Airport and Ports
- Mykonos Airport is about 3 km from Mykonos Town. KTEL buses connect it with Fabrika station and the New Port, and taxis and private transfers are available.
- The New Port in Tourlos, about 3 km from town, handles most ferries and cruise ships. Take the sea bus or the bus from the Old Port station into town.
- The Old Port is in the centre of Mykonos Town and is used by smaller boats, including trips to the island of Delos.
